Greetings!

Leslie Smith, General Manager, TechTownTechTown's story adds a new and critical chapter with the hiring of Leslie Smith as its first general manager.

Smith, a skilled economic development leader who's equally passionate about energizing people and building bridges to opportunity, will manage TechTown's day-to-day operations while also serving as the lead liaison between staff, tenant companies, entrepreneurs and management.

"I was born in Detroit, and I have a special commitment to the renaissance of this place," Smith said. "I look forward to being even a small part of the solution."

Sponsored by Corp! Magazine

Pam PerryMake your way to TechTown's First Friday on August 6 to hear PR coach and social media strategist Pam Perry offer tangible tips on networking that will help entrepreneurs build their businesses by leveraging relationships.

The event is August 6 from 4 to 6 p.m. at NextEnergy, 461 Burroughs Street, in TechTown. A $5 donation is encouraged to help offset event costs.

Since TechTown opened in 2004, First Fridays have been a gathering place for doers and thinkers in Detroit. The events have grown into a networking hub for hundreds of entrepreneurs, professionals, mentors and investors.

Let TechOne Printing meet your back-to-school office supply needs
Kristen Weimert, TechOne Printing Manager

Be sure to stop by the business center of choice for Detroit entrepreneurs for all your back-to-school office supplies and document production needs.

Not heading back to school? Fall is a great time of year to stock up on discounted office supplies anyway to get you through the rest of the year.

TechOne Printing also offers printed poster packages including print, mount and laminating at prices startups can afford.

Word's been getting around about TechOne Printing, which hit the radio waves this summer with a series of ads on WDRJ AM 1440. Print center manager Kristen Weimert partnered with Gemini Media Group, a client in the SmartStart business accelerator program that has been hosting a talk show on the station from 7:00 to 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays in July.

Visit the TechOne Printing site to learn more about how Kristen can help your small business put its best face forward!
Hollywood comes to TechTown

Harold and Kumar
When the 2011 Hollywood feature A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas debuts, look closely and you may see signs of TechTown.

Well, the cameo actually belongs to the building soon to be known as TechTwo.

Harold, Kumar and their crew filmed at TechTown's TechTwo facility, formerly the Dalgleish Cadillac dealership, and worked around the clock to transform the empty facility into a "New York City tree lot."

Harold and Kumar's Christmas romp is one of many Hollywood productions that have turned to Michigan in search of low-cost, high quality environments.  Sparked by the Michigan Film Incentive, the country's premier film incentive program, and Michigan-based film facilities, filmmakers across the country are seeing the unequaled benefits of being made in Michigan.
First Friday survey results are in!

Thanks to everyone who took the time to complete the First Friday survey this month. TechTown values your input, and we will be analyzing the hundreds of responses to make improvements to the event.

And the lucky winner of a $25 gift certificate to TechOne Printing is....Paul Ozment! Congratulations, Paul, and thanks to all for participating!
Canadians solve job creation on stage and off
From Randal's Detroit blog

Randal CharltonThis month after my ritual visit to Stratford, Ontario, I returned to Detroit convinced that Canadians have considerably more than great acting and ice hockey to offer the world.

For a start, they are leading the world out of the economic recession. Canada has added more than 227,000 jobs in the past three months, all but replacing jobs lost during the 2008-2009 recession.

Maybe it's time to recognize that Canadians know a thing or two about economic development.

Twitter_bluebird Can social networking sites like Twitter really help you sell more books? Absolutely!

On August 12 you can learn how to make the most of this powerful networking tool in the Boost Your Book Sales With Twitter teleseminar that I'm presenting along with Tony Eldridge, author of Conducting Effective Twitter Contests.

Not only that, you will learn how to persuade established leaders to help you passionately promote a Twitter contest which will introduce you and your book to many new people.

HOW TO: Add Multimedia to Your Blog

HOW TO: Add Multimedia to Your Blog

Blog Image

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

A website without multimedia is like a cupcake without icing: Functional but lacking. These days, all manner of web pages from huge company sites to small business blogs are expected to add audio, photo, or video to their posts and homepages.

While this all sounds well and good for multimedia companies that produce endless amounts of content, small businesses with text-based websites can run into trouble finding and providing appropriate content. The real trick is adding multimedia that enriches your site, product, or brand without taking away from your company's core message and aesthetic. And how do you get a rich multimedia experience without hiring a coder?

This is rarely easy. To help, we've collected some simple resources to add audio, photo or video to your blog.

The Basics

For most blog hosting sites, including WordPress and Tumblr, most multimedia is handled through embed codes. Don't worry, you don't need to know HTML; you just need to know where the button for viewing and editing HTML on your blog post is. All embeds can be handled as simple copy-and-paste jobs using these resources.

WordPress, Tumblr and any other half-decent blog host will have ways to add multimedia in their dashboard. Some of these are better than others. Tumblr tools are pretty intuitive whereas WordPress sometimes glitches when switching between HTML and visual formats. To save you all sorts of headaches, the following resources work off embed codes. This means you can see and edit all your multimedia visually, then copy-and-paste the final code into your post as HTML. Simple as that.

by Erika Martin

What follows below is an interview with Arnold Hannon, author of Sketches of Murder: an eye-opening experience/ 50 Years of Murder in the Motor City 1960-2009.

It's a follow-up for a previous article. Hannon is a prolific writer, a voice to be reckoned with. He is also author of The American Scheme, The Cold Blooded Naked Truth.

He says: 'My story is a tug of war between mother and son, regarding the phantom 23 chromosomes of my father. Like gravity and mass pulls the Earth together to form our world. Once all the elements of my autobiography are pulled together the world that I inherited will take form.' http://www.americanschemebook.com/

Examiner: Who is your favorite author and who would you say you model yourself after?

Hannon: I have many favorite authors, topping the list are Truman Capote, Earnest Hemingway, Ray Bradberry, and Donald Goines. Although I get my inspiration from various authors, I like to stay true to myself. I would like to consider myself an original author instead of a copy of someone else's style.'

Sketches of Murder: 50 Years of Murder in the Motor City

Buy Now: Lulu.com ($15) | ISBN 978- 0- 557- 45223- 1

Sketches of Murder revisits nearly 250 murder scenes in Detroit from 1960- 2009 by capturing local newspaper headlines and articles from that time period.

Hannon argues forcefully that solving problems violently is not the answer, and makes a strong case for non- violent conflict resolution.

Particularly relevant in light of recent events, Hannon's painstaking research and relevant commentary will undoubtedly prove valuable to those caught in the crossfire of a violent society.

The American Scheme: The Cold- Blooded Naked Truth

Buy Now: American Scheme ($20) | ISBN 978- 0- 557- 45223- 1

Before I delve into the egregious renderings of my past, I would like to express my thoughts regarding the so- called game. The Game has languished in the underworld sub- culture of "African- American Culture" in the United States, for far too many generations. My life's journey led me into that sordid lifestyle. I realize, that there are those individuals, who are living in our communities, believe that, The Game is a mythological underground legend, buried in the annals of urban folklore. "The American Scheme" dispels many of the innuendo's, myth's, and rumors blowing in the winds of time, swirling around that lexicon called, The Game. The Game is real. What I'm proposing to my readers, is that you look past my at times, youthful, pompous, arrogant actions and explore the Psychological dynamics of my actions. After all conscious thoughts are manifested through our subconscious mind. Click here to purchase the book.
