Motown Writers Network Announces
7th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Conference & Jam
A Celebration of the Literary Arts in Detroit

DETROIT – "Is There A Book In You?" is the theme of the 7th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Conference and Jam, hosted by the Motown Writers Network, in partnership for a second year with the non-profit organization, Detroit Impact.  The conference is November 12 and 13, 2010 and aims to celebrate the literary arts with Detroit area authors, writers and avid readers.

The two-day event is an opportunity for aspiring and established authors and writers to connect with colleagues, peers and most importantly, patrons of their art: readers.  Since 2000, the Motown Writers Network has served as a viable resource and networking organization for writers in the metropolitan Detroit area.  This year is the organization's 10th anniversary.

"I'm so excited about this year's conference," says Sylvia Hubbard, founder of the Motown Writers Network.  "The conference has grown so much through the years and this being our 10- year anniversary as an organization just shows that the literary community in Detroit is alive and hungry for resources.  And that's what we strive to bring."

Presenting at the conference are such notables as New York best-selling author, publisher and visionary, Relentless Aaron and Detroit urban music author, Chris Campbell.  The event will also feature literary experts, publishers for pitching sessions, workshops, and awards.

The conference host partner, Detroit Impact has supported the Motown Writers Network since its inception, according to Calvin Colbert, executive director.

"Sylvia and I go way back," says Colbert.  "Years ago, she volunteered with us as a young mother, bringing her children with her.  She shared her dream to have the Motown Writers Network and we've seen her dream come true. So, definitely, we're one of her strongest supporters.  Writing and reading are very important parts of our programs at the Detroit Impact Center and we encourage those efforts every opportunity we can."

For parents who want to attend the conference, there will be a Literary Kids Zone with activities for children and youth.  Many of the conference activities are of no charge to attendees.

The two-day schedule for the 7th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Conference & Jam is as follows:

Friday, November 12
Poetry Night, hosted by Poetry, Pages and Scribes and EchoVerse Entertainment (Free)
6:00-9:00 p.m.
Detroit Impact Center
9930 Greenfield
Detroit, MI  48227

Saturday, November 13
Essence of Motown Literary Conference (Fee & Free Activities)
8:00-9:30 a.m. - Registration
9:30-6:00 p.m.  - Activities
Northwest Activities Center
18100 Meyers
Detroit, MI  48235
Featuring:
  • Workshops (schedule to be released soon)
  • Book Marketplace
  • Writers Luncheon
  • Keynote Address by Relentless Aaron
  • Author-Readers Panel

  • Literary Kids Zone
There will be an Essence of Motown Literary Conference After- Affair following the conference with Detroit jazz saxophonist, Yancyy and spoken word artist Brook Blander at 7 p.m.  at the Rub BBQ and Pub, 18 W. Adams in Detroit.

Over the past seven years, more than 1,500 authors, writers and readers have gathered to celebrate the literary arts in Detroit and to strengthen literacy in metro Detroit.  To that end, conference attendees are encouraged to bring teen and adult books to the conference, which will be donated to the Detroit Impact Center's Youth Library and ProLiteracy of Detroit.

Sponsors of the 7th Annual Essence of Motown Literary Conference & Jam include Penguin Books (New York), Rolling Out Magazine, Miller Design Studio and HubBooks.

Socialize or It's a Waste!

Do you have good "netiquette?" Is there a Golden Rule of Netiquette?

You would think that the Social Networking would cause folks to network.

Not! It has caused folks to spam more. To be a "drive by blogger" and to just push and shove their content off on folks.

They are in facebook, twitter and linkedin posting uptheir SALES PITCH and boom - they're gone. Complaining later that social networking doesn't work!

Yes, it works. If you ENGAGE. If you listen. If you care. If you want to helpful and not just push your book, product or service off on anyone who will listen!

So, the Golden Rules:
1. Thou shall RETWEET
2. Thou shall COMMENT
3. Thou shall LIKE on Facebook
4. Thou shall be nice and appreciate people.
5. Thou shall not talk ALL the time! Listen!

If you want more friends and followers, be nice, show people you are LISTENING and be friendly.  If you want more FRIENDS, show yourself FRIENDLY.

Heard that one before?  Hmmm. I believe Christians might have the upper hand in this one, HUH? How about sharing this email?

Can Corporate Tweets Violate Securities Disclosure Rules?

Update - November 1, 2010

Can Corporate Tweets Violate Securities Disclosure Rules?

Many Fortune 500 companies have corporate Twitter accounts and use them to disseminate information to the public.  Depending on the subject matter, however, using this handy, real-time marketing tool could also lead to an inadvertent violation of the Securities and Exchange Commission's disclosure rules.

The SEC's Regulation FD (for "fair disclosure") prohibits publicly-traded companies from selectively disclosing material information - that is, disclosing it to some persons but not others. If a public company wishes to disclose material information about itself, it must make public disclosure, either by filing a Form 8-K or through some other method reasonably designed to provide broad public distribution.  If a corporate Twitter post, or "tweet," which is not a public disclosure under the regulations, contained discussion of an impending merger or acquisition or other material information that had not previously been disclosed publicly, there could be a Regulation FD violation.  Also, federal and state securities laws generally require that any disclosure of material information not omit information necessary to keep the information that is disclosed from being misleading. The dilemma is that tweets are limited to 140 characters in length, which is unlikely to be enough to include all legally required information.  For these reasons, corporate tweets containing material information about the company or its securities should be avoided.

For more information about legislation or litigation involving technology, intellectual property protection of information technology assets or any other Information Technology law issue, contact your Miller Canfield attorney or Kathy Ossian, Leader of our Information Technology Team, or call her direct at 313.496.7644.

Other forms of online communications, however, can be effectively used to address such subjects.  Microsoft Corporation recently announced that it will use its investor relations website to issue the company's earnings announcements.  While the website contains links to Microsoft's Twitter and Facebook pages, it doesn't appear that either are used by the company for announcements to investors.  Follow this link for more information on Microsoft's approach.
