You are cordially invited to participate in the first Idlewild Writers Conference & Retreat, co-sponsored by Broadside Press and Aquarius Press. Idlewild provides a wonderful environment and haven for artists of all kinds. Our focus at this conference is the rich literary legacy associated with this historic African-American community beyond its fame as one of the premier entertainment and performance venues during the 50s and early 60s for black artists, dancers, singers, and musicians. Please join us as we continue to legacy build...and bring some of your work to share one-on-one,  with a group, or in your own space. We have speakers, workshop sessions, master classes, a book fair, discussion panels and a walking tour of historic literary sites. We want you to join us...We welcome you.

About Idlewild

Idlewild is a vacation and retirement community in Yates Township located in a small rural northwestern part of Michigan near the southeastern border of Lake County. It was one of only a few resorts in the country where African-Americans were allowed to vacation and purchase property before this discrimination became illegal in 1964. Called the "Black Eden" from 1912 through the mid-1960s, Idlewild was an active year-round community and was visited by well-known entertainers and professionals from throughout the country. Famous Idlewilders include W.E.B. DuBois, Madame C.J. Walker, and Charles Chestnutt.
